Tote bag

I finished one bag on my journey to use up most of my fabric. This bag is made completely from fabric and supplies I had in my studio. I loved these panels, they are so fun. Hopefully someone else will agree and buy it from the shop where I sell things!

Here is the fabric. I decided to add a stronger material for the bottom of the bag.

I sewed the 3 pieces of the bag together into a strip. For the outer part of the bag I am using my industrial Pfaff walking foot.

I top-stitched both seams.

The fabric was a little thinner than I would like, so I added quilt batting for stability. I used basting spray, then put the fabric on it and cut around the bag.

I cut the corners to prep my boxed corners. I cut 2 1/4” (from the side) by 2”.

I sewed down the sides from the top to the corner cutout.

Before sewing the boxed corners, I need to make the liner. I didn’t have a piece that I liked that was big enough, so I put two pieces together. I used my Brother CS6000i on the liner.

I put my bag over my liner and cut around it (except the bottom, which is the fold).

I added two jeans pockets from a previous refashion. I put them both on one side because I like the design on the other side too much to cover it up. Then I cut the corners at the bottom and sewed the sides like the outer fabric of the bag.

I flattened the corners and sewed them down (all 4 of them).

An amazing trick I learned recently is to sew the boxed corner of the liner to the boxed corner on the bag so that they stay together once the bag is finished. No liner turning itself inside out!

I sewed around the top- both fabrics folded under. And added a 24” strap of webbing for my handles, at 3” from the side seam.
